Associate’s Degree for the Fast Tracker
There are two main reasons why most people get an associate’s degree. The first is so that they can fast track into the job market quicker. The second reason is so they can prepare for further bachelor degree studies. The advantage of an associate’s degree is that you can get an education rather quickly in numerous fields and it will allow you to get a job and work while you get ready to finish your bachelor degree. An associate’s degree is perfect for the fast tracker and there are other advantages to getting an associate’s degree early in your working years. Let’s look at how this person uses an associate’s degree to fast track into a job and get a head start on their career:
It is usually more economical to get an associate’s degree through a community college. The tuition in most cases is significantly less when you do your associate’s degree studies at a 2-year college instead of a 4-year college. And in most cases when the community college is regionally-accredited, much of the work can be transferred into a 4-year bachelor’s degree program (depending on the program of study). Students at community colleges typically live in homes and apartments in the local area instead of on-campus so there are potential savings there too.
An associate’s degree gives a student more job opportunities faster. The fast tracker usually does not want to spend a lot of time in college before getting a job and making any money. It could be that the student does not have parents that can afford college or the student does not want to incur too much debt in getting an education. Sometimes there are people in their mid-career who need to go for a career change because opportunities in the job market of their former career have dried up. The latter would definitely not want to stay in school too long without a job because they typically have family responsibilities. An associate’s degree usually takes about 60 credits (20 classes) to complete and the student can probably start working in the field shortly thereafter.
A key advantage of an associate’s degree program is the variety of occupational programs available. Employers in a community have relationships with the local community colleges and together they plan the curriculum. Schools oftentimes query employers as to what skills need to be taught for the various jobs they offer resulting in a student ready to go to work as soon as they graduate from their program. Students can get associate’s degrees in education (childcare), law enforcement, library science, construction and metal trade, drafting, healthcare, electronics, business, and many other occupations.
Check to see that the community college has career placement services. Most do. After you get your associate’s degree you can get assistance from the career services department for creating a resume, preparing for an interview, and searching for jobs.

I am thinking about attending a Community College, & getting an Associate of Art in Pre-Elementary Ed., because I’ve always wanted to be a Teacher. I think it would be a great start for me both financially and educationally! If I work hard, I can easily transfer my credits to the local university… And finish up on a Bachelor’s Degree!
