Details When Doing Your College Search

It is a big job comparing and searching for the right college to attend. Every college has their website and each claims to be the best but you must be careful to not miss the details. The details might seem minor now but could have a significant impact on you later. These are details that might be easily overlooked. Let’s explore further.

Look at the acceptance rates for the college. Acceptance rates will be lower for Ivy League schools but in general you should not let acceptance rates prohibit you from applying to any school. Don’t just look at the percentage of the acceptance rate. Look at how many applicants there are each year. One should also note that just because an Ivy League school turns down your application it does not mean you cannot get a quality college education.

Analyze the diversity of the college and its campus. If you can find the demographic statistics of each college in your search and compare then it would be even better. Colleges that are diverse with representation from different ethnic, cultural, and gender groups are also those where a student has the best chance of a rich education experience. Also take a look at the faculty pages of the college’s website and you will get an idea how diverse the backgrounds are of the different professors. Another aspect to compare in your search is if the school has a strict religious affiliation. It could be that a school with a strict religious affiliation is not compatible with your specific religious preferences.

Try to get information on the average class size. This will vary by college department but it would make for a good comparison in your college search. When classes are on average above 50 students, the entire learning experience can be very impersonal. Of course at this level in your education, the personal nature of learning may not be as important to you. So you have to ask yourself if you would do well in a large class or if you prefer more personal attention. You also want to look at the total annual population of the school. Smaller schools may be lacking in extracurricular activities such as sports programs.

Compare the settings of the schools when doing your search. Schools can be located in urban, rural, or suburban locations. Then ask yourself if you can tolerate a school that is located within the crowded inner city or one that is so remote that there is nothing to do in your leisure time. Right now when you are comparing and searching for colleges, education is foremost on your mind. But when you finally get into school, you need to be able to take a break from your studies and do other things. This is where the school’s setting will play a big role.

As you search and compare the various colleges, make sure you keep track of their application deadlines and fees. You will probably want to rank those dates accordingly plus budget for the expense of submitting the application. Don’t miss an opportunity by overlooking an important application deadline date.
