Applying for a College MBA Degree Program

A Master of Business Administration (MBA) is usually a minimum requirement by many employers before considering a candidate for upper management positions. Applying for a college MBA degree program requires a few preparatory and research steps so that you can get into the right program for you. Let’s look at some information you need to know when applying for a college MBA degree program:

You are going to need a GMAT score. Not all MBA degree programs require a GMAT score but most do. GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test and it is an exam consisting of written and verbal questions. It also contains analytical writing sections. Many of the prestigious colleges select candidates with higher GMAT scores. It is also a test you can prepare for and there are plenty of study guides available at bookstores, websites and libraries. The GMAT is used mostly as a means for evaluating the likelihood of success the applicant might have in the program.

Consider the school’s accreditation. Lack of accreditation does not necessarily mean that a college has a poor MBA program. However, it should alert you to the need to dig further. Many colleges offering a MBA degree will have voluntary accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Lack of this accreditation might be because the school is new, has not volunteered to be part of the accreditation, or does not meet the standards of the AACSB.

Letters of recommendation may be required. If they are, you will probably need prior or current employers and professors to write them for you. There are plenty of sample letters on the internet you can follow and more than likely your professor and/or supervisors will know how to write them too. The letters should cite examples of your skills, leadership and work ethic that would give a good indication of your success in a MBA degree program.

The teaching format will most likely be centered on case studies. A college MBA degree program should be designed to give you mastery of the application of business skills. This is why many of the professors in MBA degree programs will deliver course content in what is known as the case study teaching method. Case studies are sourced by real problems and challenge situations faced by business today.

Most MBA degree programs work well when you already have job experience. When you already have from two to five years of job experience, you can probably relate to the case studies better. This is especially true if you have been in similar situations as those presented by the cases. The fact that you have been working also gives a good indication that you have the level of maturity required to complete a college MBA degree program.

You will need to write an essay with your application. You can find samples of application essays from many sources but what you want to do is prepare to write about your achievements or how you have handled a particular business situation in the past.
